Creating Protected and UnProtected Drives

Hard drives are created as one of two types: Protected Drive and UnProtected Drive.

Creating a Protected Drive

A protected drive provides uninterrupted access to data in case of hardware failure.

blueexclamation.jpg  When creating protected drives, physical disks are added as pairs. If the physical disks are different sizes, the size difference must be no more than 128 MB. The size of the protected drive will be the size of the smaller physical disk in the pair; any additional space will not be usable.

To create a protected drive:

1           In the Task Pane, under Drive Harmony Tasks, click Create Protected Drive. camera.bmp

2           A box with a list of all unpartitioned physical disks will appear. In the list of disks, check two physical disks to use in the hard drive. camera.bmp

3           Click Create Drive. The drive will be formatted and assigned the first available drive letter after the c:\ drive. The drive will be assigned a name of ProtectedDrive with the first available number appended (ProtectedDrive1, ProtectedDrive2 and so on).
While the request is being processed, a message with progress bar will be displayed.  camera.bmp

4           After the drive is created, it will appear in the List View. The drive will be initialized and synchronized to prepare it for use. The progress of the initialization is displayed in parenthesis in the Size column. As the initialization progresses, more space on the drive can be utilized. When initialization is complete, the initialization information will disappear. camera.bmp

5           In the List View, click the drive to view details and the protection status of the protected drive in the Details Pane. The protection status (shown circled below) displays the various synchronization stages of the physical disks in the drive. The stages are (1) OutofSync, (2) Synchronizing, and (3) Protected. See Monitoring Drive Status for more information.
yellowcaution.jpg  The drive is not protected until the protection status is Protected. Synchronization can require a considerable amount of time (hours); the length of time will depend on the size and speed of the physical disks.

6           When a sufficient amount of space has been initialized, the hard drive is ready for use. Under Server Folders and Hard Drives in the dashboard, a Server Folder can be created for the hard drive.

Creating an UnProtected Drive

An unprotected drive can be extended when needed, but does not provide the benefit of uninterrupted access to data in case of hardware failure.

To create an unprotected drive:

1           In the Task Pane, under Drive Harmony Tasks, click Create UnProtected Drive. camera.bmp

2           A list of all unpartitioned physical disks will appear. In the list of disks, check one or more physical disks to use in the hard drive.  camera.bmp
