DataCore Software and emBoot Announce Cost-effective iSCSI Disaster Recovery and Diskless Operation over LANs
Enables diskless servers and rapid emergency recovery from the IP-SAN for server farms, grids, blades, and VMware-based virtual infrastructures

DataCore Software and emBoot Inc. have announced an affordable solution that enables administrators to use DataCore's SANmelody and SANsymphony software platforms and emBoot's netBoot/i software to allow Windows servers to remotely boot off an iSCSI IP-SAN using any standard Ethernet network interface card – eliminating the requirement for local, internal disk drives. Businesses simplify their ability to quickly re-purpose their systems and gain cost savings by enabling true diskless operation and added business continuity with a simple and fast recovery approach for local boot disk failures. Users can rapidly recover their systems from disasters by booting from an emergency OS image located on the SANmelody- or SANsymphony-powered IP-SAN. By using the DataCore and netBoot/i combination, users and network administrators finally can take advantage of standard LAN connections to improve uptime and lower their cost of Windows-based SANs, server farms, utility computing grids, and disaster recovery deployments.
"DataCore Software and emBoot are working together to improve the overall customer experience and to eliminate the recovery time for system disk failures and the cost burden of having boot drives on each system,” said Carl Foggin, Director of Business Development for emBoot. “Together we allow companies to implement lower-cost server provisioning and consolidation strategies and increase their overall system uptime."
Machines can now be easily re-purposed (provisioned) by booting from different operating system boot volumes as needed. Virtual servers and their guest operating systems are also able to boot directly from a DataCore-powered SAN. The netBoot/i solution has been tested to work on VMware Workstation, GSX and ESX servers, as well as on Microsoft Virtual PC and Virtual Server.
With the combination of DataCore's storage services, 'auto provisioning virtual capacity' and simple user interface, server deployments, disaster recovery and storage management become much simpler and a lot faster. Administrators simply create a snapshot of a single netBoot/i boot volume and copy the volume to multiple iSCSI targets, enabling servers and their storage to be operational in minutes rather than hours. This efficiency, when combined with reduced hardware from not needing to deploy multiple high cost HBAs and diskless operation, enables organizations to leverage shared storage with less complexity and lower costs.
"Our technologies work hand-in-hand to open the door for companies to simplify large- scale, virtual and blade server implementations, speed up system deployments and reduce the cost to protect corporate data and rapidly recover failed systems," said George Teixeira, CEO and President of DataCore Software. “Best of all, you get the benefits without adding cost and hassles since it works over Ethernet connects and existing LANs."
