Moorfields Eye Hospital Deploys DataCore -- 'Best-in-class' Central Storage Management and Fast Disk-to-Disk Backup Solution
London, U.K. — DataCore Software today announced that Moorfields, the oldest and largest specialized eye hospital in the United Kingdom, has chosen DataCore; SANmelody; and Nexsan ATABeast SATA disk systems to meet their growing storage demand and backup requirements. Moorfields stores thousands of electronic patient records, tens of thousands of scanned paper patient records, several hundred thousand images of eyes, millions of patient demographics and appointments, and millions of documents on staff home and group drives. Increasing storage demands, ability to backup the data centrally and replicated to another site were critical, and a cost effective, flexible, scalable solution was needed.
NCE Europe, a leading authorized DataCore service provider, architected a solution using the existing Gigabit Ethernet LAN. Steven Gill, responsible for the infrastructure support at Moorfields, said, "Until NCE appeared on the scene we were continually being offered Fibre Channel and NAS solutions." Steven didn't want to add the extra complexity of a Fibre Channel network and so was very pleased with the solution, and even more pleased once implemented.
"At Moorfields we are continually asked to provide additional storage to existing servers, which invariably means buying more internal disks or a new server. This takes time, incurs added cost and is disruptive," commented Steven. "Now all I do is simply allocate a 2Tb LUN to the server and it only uses the disk it needs. I am only too aware that a lot is promised and that in practice many products don't deliver. However, with SANmelody it does exactly what is says - it just works." He continued, "The solution has met our expectations. It gives us centralized management control and has allowed all our servers to be backed up. We have also achieved a scalable and open architecture for us to build upon as we grow in the future."
Initially, Moorfields were looking for a solution that could provide a backup to all their servers. SANmelody has enabled them to do this and so much more. Moorfields has experienced tremendous growth in data. This growth, coupled with the requirement for secure data throughout the hospital and the ever-present need for maximum efficiency, prompted the need for a solution that could scale and evolve. "The solution is an excellent fit with their existing architecture since it provided the increased efficiency, cost management and flexibility to meet their future demands," said NCE Europe Account Manager Matt Moss.
