Traveller CPR Features and Technology

Continuous Data Protection (CDP) and Recovery
Traveller CPR protects all of your data – No “Gaps”.

Until now, prescheduled and predefined recovery point methods, such as snapshots and backups, were the most common way to restore corrupted databases, restore systems from data center failures, and manage disaster recovery. However, these approaches require scheduling, impact production, and require a good deal of coordination with applications. Worst of all, because they occur at intervals, they leave large "gaps" (hours, days) in the time line during which data is unprotected. As a result, all the data between the time/date the snapshot or backup occurred and the date recovery is attempted is lost in the event of a disaster.

Business Continuance

Traveller is a Business Continuance Protection Solution providing behind the scenes (transparent to application systems) high-availability synchronous mirroring to safeguard production data and systems.

Traveller Protection –Across Systems, Across Applications, Across Storage

Traveller protects all your systems (Windows, LINUX, VMWare, Netware, MacOS, Solaris, AIX, UNIX...), all your applications (Exchange, SQL, Sybase, Oracle, etc...), all your storage (all types and systems) and your sites (protects over distant, separate failover sites: Traveller spans systems, rooms, buildings or even campus-wide). Traveller is non disruptive to your systems, it requires no agent or client software and it works transparently behind the scenes without impacting your applications.

Asynchronous Timeshifting Technology and MakeTime Volume Productivity

Traveller separately and also in background protects and captures all data changes creating time-addressable storage (timestamping and logging all changes). When a time point is selected (simply Dial Back the Clock) the change log file plus a baseline image of the volume are combined to create a MakeTime Virtual Volume that can be instantly used or served up to restore a system (MakeTime #1) or served to other systems or applications. Traveller’s Timeshifting technologies enable other systems to use these virtual MakeTime volume images to perform concurrent work (e.g., backup the volume –MakeTime #3) enhancing overall productivity.

Traveller is non disruptive and easy to administer. It requires no agent or client software and it works transparently behind the scenes without impacting applications.

Virtualization - Flexibility, Simplicity, Hardware Independence and Efficient Utilization

Powered by DataCore™ storage virtualization makes the MakeTime volume flexible and versatile. As a result, it can be deployed easily and quickly to meet the user’s needs. Directly from the Traveller interface, it can be served up to restore production systems in the event of disk failure or data corruption. The application servers will recognize and work with the MakeTime volume as the original storage assigned, since all mappings and coherent datasets have been preserved, and return to production. This flexibility also makes it easy to accommodate changes to the environment and configuration as they occur.

Virtualization provides “hardware independence,” giving Traveller users the freedom to choose any storage hardware they prefer. It also gives users the power to allocate those resources as and when required, greatly enhancing utilization efficiency. Appliances and other hardware-bound solutions cannot offer this freedom and control. In short, Traveller combines control of the time dimension with virtualization’s power and simplicity in managing, allocating and mapping disk space, making time and “space” powerful allies instead of adversaries. Users gain efficient data protection, the power to deliver that data wherever and whenever needed, and enhanced productivity through the ability to shift time to fit their needs.

Time Addressable Storage, Timestamping and Log Files

Traveller™ timestamps, logs and time sequences every data change. It records the entire time continuum, allowing you to visit any previous point in time, even right up to the moment prior to an event, ensuring that your data is recovered quickly and efficiently.

With Traveller, you can do more with time and be more productive. Traveller’s advanced Time-shifting technology enables you to utilize copies in parallel of your storage for test servers, creating backups, and running other concurrent or offline applications all without impacting your online production systems. You choose what is convenient for you and you never have to worry about interfering with your normal production. With Traveller, you have the freedom to create these MakeTime volumes so you can use them as needed, when needed.

Traveller provides an easy-to-use slider-bar which allows you to set a recoverable time period spanning from minutes to years, it’s your choice. You can recover to any previous point in time by using a clock and calendar interface. It’s as easy as clicking the day and time you want to recover. With Traveller you also get another safety net level of protection for those cases in which your snapshots or backup systems fail. Traveller lets you dial the clock and time shift through the time continuum to select your own restore point so you can get your systems back in business quickly.

Traveller –How it works? Simple Steps to Time Travel

1. Select Recoverable Time Period

2. Dial back the clock to travel back in time from just moments to days before to restore your data

3. Serve up the recovered MakeTime volume

Faster Disk speed recovery

Traveller enables you to recover applications by traveling in time within a user defined protection window.
Traditionally, the process of getting applications back online after data corruption has involved considerable time and effort. What’s worse is that you spend all that time and effort recovering from points in time that can far precede the corruption of the data. For example, last night’s tape back up or this mornings snapshot can leave large gaps in protection which means loss of data. On top of that, the recovery process can be slow and labor-intensive.
Traveller, reduces the time and effort you spend on recovery by providing you with a simple and easy to use interface. Also, with Traveller’s unique time-shifting technology, you can focus your efforts on recovering your systems to a good state just before the unwanted event happened, eliminating the time gap and subsequent data loss.

Traveller Protection Window

Traveller, while providing business continuance protection of your primary data for production use, Traveller also captures an initial baseline copy of the production data to keep track of all updates to that data during the selected protection window (recoverability period). The amount of storage required by Traveller™ will depend on the size of your protected environment, the rate at which your data is changing, and the span of your-defined protection time (from days to years - see Step 1 of ‘Simple Steps to Time Travel’ above).

Any-point in time ‘True State’ Restoration

Because Traveller™ captures a coherent and holistic view of the data, as well as capturing every write, it allows you to do power-consistent recovery. For example, if an SQL database administrator knows that a corruption occurred to a particular database at 02:15 AM, he or she could restore the database to 02:14 AM and restart the application.
How? Traveller captures a cross-server, cross-application, cross-storage group view of your data at exactly the same moment in time. Your entire operating environment “state” (a coherent and holistic data set image) is exactly as it existed at that point in time. Enabling systems and applications to be recovered reliably, in the same manner as power or crash consistent recovery.

Maketime Productivity Engine

Traveller™, with advanced Timeshifting technology, enables you to use time addressable copies of your storage to run test servers, create backups, and run other applications. Simply pick a time and create a MakeTime image of your data that can then be used to support concurrent or offline applications. Best of all, you won’t impact normal production.
Traveller ‘MakeTime Volumes’ optimize workflow. A MakeTime volume is a Time based image of the data set that can be easily served up to applications for many concurrent uses.

Get more work done in parallel, use MakeTime Volumes for:
• data migration
• data mining and post analysis
• auditing and compliance
• testing and forensics
• offline processing
• upgrades and patches
• backup and archival optimizations

Don’t stop running jobs to get these jobs done, do the work in background…Greater productivity, parallel work, less impacts and downtime.

Retroactive or Timeshifted backups

Manage and consolidate backups at a central location. Do non-disruptive backups when convenient to your staff versus looking for backup windows “late in the night and on weekends and holidays”. Forgot to archive last months data, no problem –do a retro backup its simple with Traveller.

Far more efficient and no impact to production.

Retroactive or Time-shifted backups are now possible!

“Zero impact to production backups” means: instead of doing the backups at night, why not do them in the morning in background while your production continues to run? Or if it has been some time between backups, do a retroactive backup…”I forgot to make an archive copy last month” no problem with Traveller, do it now or whenever.

Virtualization

Traveller CPR: Enables a new level of flexibility for time (any) and space (virtual).
The agility and simplicity of Virtualization combined with Time Travel Restoration.
Virtualization adds flexibility, ease of use and the ability to rapidly address change within IT infrastructures. Traveller’s timeshifting technology in the same manner adds another level of flexibility by providing users real control of the time dimension. Traveller combines the benefits of virtualization with time travel.
  • Traveller is a complete system that virtualizes, timeshifts and protects data
  • Traveller makes data, time addressable – Maximizing Productivity
  • Traveller adds time travel recovery and business continuance
  • Traveller captures changes asynchronously, eliminating bottlenecks
  • Traveller virtualization eliminates complexity – Simple “Point & Click” Restores
Traveller makes it easy to map the restored data (the MakeTime volume) directly to a system. Virtualization makes this a simple ‘point and click’ process. Reapplying copies, backups or snapshots on non-virtual systems often is complex and does not always work since the process is complicated and environments continue to evolve over time so name relationships, states and mappings change. Virtualization does the hard work of managing these details.
