DataCore Software Announces Expanded Integration of Its Storage Hypervisor with VMware to Help Enterprises Successfully Deploy Virtualization

SANsymphony-V, Industry’s First Storage Hypervisor, Certified “VMware Ready™ for vSphere 5

LAS VEGAS & FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
August 29, 2011 Today at VMworld 2011, DataCore Software, the premier provider of storage virtualization software, announced expanded support for VMware’s new vSphere 5.0™ virtualization platform. Within the next 30 days, DataCore’s SANsymphony™-V will be certified as VMware Ready™ for vSphere 5.0. DataCore’s SANsymphony-V, the industry’s first storage hypervisor, is a next-generation software solution that has enabled thousands of VMware customers to successfully eliminate their storage-related barriers. With DataCore, IT organizations reap the full benefits of server and desktop virtualization, including reduced costs, improved hardware utilization and increased operational efficiency.

“As a storage hypervisor, DataCore SANsymphony-V offers a flexible, open software platform from which to provision, share, reconfigure, migrate, replicate, expand and upgrade storage without slowdowns or downtime,” states Jeffrey Slapp, Vice President of Virtualization Services at Host.net. “The product is agnostic with regard to the underlying storage hardware and its powerful features, such as auto-tiering, extend our purchasing power, maximize our cost savings, and allow us to offer clients an extremely cost-effective, self-tuning system.”

DataCore also outlined further planned SANsymphony-V and VMware integration for Q4, 2011, including:

  • A plug-in for VMware vCenter that makes it easier for administrators to monitor and provision storage subsystems, ensuring optimum performance and availability of virtual infrastructure.
  • Support for VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM).
  • Support for VMware vStorage APIs for Array Integration (VAAI).

SANsymphony-V runs either on a physical server or on a virtual machine as a virtual storage appliance. It functions as a storage hypervisor by creating and presenting virtual disks to physical and virtual hosts. Storage devices and disk drives are abstracted from the hardware and appear to hosts as well-behaved virtual disks (or logical unit numbers), or as a pool of disk resources, with a single uniform interface. SANsymphony-V accomplishes this with advanced features that work infrastructure-wide, including storage auto-tiering, continuous data protection and recovery, synchronous and asynchronous replication, virtual disk pooling and migration.

“Through our partnership with DataCore, VMware is able to help customers virtualize and optimize their storage infrastructure so it delivers the performance, scalability, flexibility and redundancy required to support desktop and server virtualization environments,” said Parag Patel, vice president, Global Strategic Alliances, VMware. “This capability enables customers to reap the full benefits of server and desktop virtualization.”

DataCore and VMware: The Fully Virtualized Data Center
VMware customers around the globe running VMware vSphere rely on DataCore’s solutions to deliver the critical “third dimension” of virtualization – storage. DataCore has architected its software to cost-effectively shape the shared storage infrastructure required by virtualization. Additionally, while some storage vendors recommend utilizing their hardware configurations and exotic purpose-built appliances, SANsymphony-V frees customers from costly vendor lock-in by decoupling the virtual infrastructure from the underlying disk devices and hardware.

As a result, SANsymphony-V enables data centers to use existing equipment and conventional storage devices to satisfy shared storage requirements introduced by highly dynamic, virtual environments. Customers can easily create cost-effective shared storage for virtual servers and desktops from new and existing resources, enjoying greater investment protection, higher capacity utilization, better performance, and affordable, high availability storage.

“Shared storage is the weak link in server and desktop virtualization initiatives; first as a performance bottleneck and then as a single point-of-failure,” said George Teixeira, president and CEO of DataCore Software. “Virtualization efforts intended to reduce server or desktop costs that overlook this area often hit the ‘storage wall’ and stall. SANsymphony-V is the missing link – a long-overdue storage hypervisor to control spiraling data growth – enabling organizations to more efficiently manage storage resources and avoid disruptions and financial surprises. And with our device-independent approach, enterprises are certain to achieve maximum ROI and the lowest TCO possible on their virtualization projects.”

Free Storage Hypervisor for VMware Experts
DataCore will offer free license keys of its breakthrough SANsymphony-V 8.1 storage hypervisor to VMware vExperts, VMware Certified Design Experts (VCDX), VMware Certified Professionals (VCP) and VMware Certified Instructors (VCI). DataCore at VMworld 2011
DataCore will be at VMworld to highlight how joint VMware and DataCore customers benefit from secure, centralized IT operations and significant cost reductions resulting from virtualizing desktops, servers and storage. Attendees are invited to visit booth #1321 to learn how to avoid major storage expenditures on the road to fully virtualized IT environments. VMworld takes place August 29 – September 31 at the Venetian in Las Vegas. To arrange to speak with DataCore executives, please contact JaeMi Pennington of Davies Murphy Group at (781) 418-2401 or datacore@daviesmurphy.com.
