For more than a decade, the cloud has been ascendant. When it first appeared, the cloud was seen as the savior of storage, offering a less expensive alternative to traditional on-premises systems. Imagine a file storage system that has been in use for years and has millions of files, some of which require immediate accessibility and some of which must be archived—but it is almost impossible to determine which is which.
